"ARISAN" : CLOSER friends, NICER moments...

It's us (MaYono, Mis Mei, me, Nana), at the first round of arisan in nana's house. Where's Mia? Ouch.. she was taking our picture).

trat..tat...tatt.... this is Mia, among us, in our picture.

THE BATTLE...

It seems clear for me that life sometimes doesn't run as smooth as we want. There will be some free wills that change it.
This year i decided to start my master degree. on that time, i thought that it will be an easy thing to handle both working and studying in the same time and the same share. in fact, i need more power to keep this work going well. Indeed.... the battle has just been started....between heart and responsibility.

MY SISTA GRADUATION DAY..

WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT LONG TIME AGO.....
SISTERS ACT.
Well, it's the hard time for us when she moved to Jakarta, especially on the first month. We missed each other badly.

My loving siblings, (my bro and sist). We've shared countless moments together to complete each other and to realize the meaning of love. Yeah...blood is thicker than water.

ENHANCING YOUR TEACHING EFFECTIVENESS

Source Unknown

Accurately assessing your students' developmental state can direct your planning and impel your teaching. For instance, recognizing a 16-year-old's concern about his appearance and his standing among his peers may promote your rapport with him and eliminate learning barriers.

Keep in mind that chronologic age and developmental stage are not always related. Throughout life, people move sequentially through developmental stages, but most people also fluctuate somewhat among stages, often in response to outside stressors. These stressors can cause a person to regress temporarily to an earlier stage. Sometimes a person may not achieve the task expected of his chronologic age. So you will need to address your students at their current developmental stages, not at the stages at which you would expect them to be because of their chronological ages.

In some situations, hopefully most, you will have time to sit down and develop a formal teaching plan. In others, you will be confronted with a "teachable moment" when the student is ready to learn and is asking pointed questions. Invariably, these moments seem to come at the most inopportune times. At times like these, you face the dilemma: to teach or not to teach. Having a knowledge of basic learning principles will help you take best advantage of these moments. Here are some principles proven to enhance teaching and learning.

Seize the moment

Teaching is most effective when it occurs in quick response to a need the learner feels. So even though you are elbow deep in something else, you should make every effort to teach the student when he or she asks. The student is ready to learn. Satisfy that immediate need for information now, and augment your teaching with more information later.

Involve the student in planning

Just presenting information to the student does not ensure learning. For learning to occur, you will need to get the student involved in identifying his learning needs and outcomes. Help him to develop attainable objectives. As the teaching process continues, you can further engage him or her by selecting teaching strategies and materials that require the student's direct involvement, such as role playing and return demonstration. Regardless of the teaching strategy you choose, giving the student the chance to test his or her ideas, to take risks, and to be creative will promote learning.

Begin with what the student knows

You will find that learning moves faster when it builds on what the student already knows. Teaching that begins by comparing the old, known information or process and the new, unknown one allows the student to grasp new information more quickly.

Move from simple to complex

The student will find learning more rewarding if he has the opportunity to master simple concepts first and then apply these concepts to more complex ones. Remember, however, that what one student finds simple, another may find complex. A careful assessment takes these differences into account and helps you plan the teaching starting point.

Accommodate the student's preferred learning style

How quickly and well a student learns depends not only on his or her intelligence and prior education, but also on the student's learning style preference. Visual learners gain knowledge best by seeing or reading what you are trying to teach; auditory learners, by listening;and tactile or psychomotor learners, by doing.

You can improve your chances for teaching success if you assess your patient's preferred learning style, then plan teaching activities and use teaching tools appropriate to that style. To assess a student's learning style, observe the student, administer a learning style inventory, or simply ask the student how he or she learns best.

You can also experiment with different teaching tools, such as printed material, illustrations, videotapes, and actual equipment, to assess learning style. Never assume, though, that your student can read well -- or even read at all.

Sort goals by learning domain

You can combine your knowledge of the student's preferred learning style with your knowledge of learning domains. Categorizing what the students need to learn into proper domains helps identify and evaluate the behaviors you expect them to show.

Learning behaviors fall in three domains: cognitive, psychomotor, and affective. The cognitive domain deals with intellectual abilities. The psychomotor domain includes physical or motor skills. The affective domain involves expression of feeling about attitudes, interests, and values. Most learning involves all three domains.

Make material meaningful

Another way to facilitate learning is to relate material to the student's lifestyle -- and to recognize incompatibilities. The more meaningful material is to a student, the quicker and easier it will be learned.

Allow immediate application of knowledge

Giving the student the opportunity to apply his or her new knowledge and skills reinforces learning and builds confidence. This immediate application translates learning to the "real world" and provides an opportunity for problem solving, feedback, and emotional support.

Plan for periodic rests

While you may want the students to push ahead until they have learned everything on the teaching plan, remember that periodic plateaus occur normally in learning. When your instructions are especially complex or lengthy, your students may feel overwhelmed and appear unreceptive to your teaching. Be sure to recognize these signs of mental fatigue and let the students relax. (You too can use these periods - to review your teaching plan and make any necessary adjustments.)

Tell your students how they are progressing

Learning is made easier when the students are aware of their progress. Positive feedback can motivate them to greater effort because it makes their goal seem attainable. Also, ask your students how they feel they are doing. They probably want to take part in assessing their own progress toward learning goals, and their input can guide your feedback. You will find their reactions are usually based on what "feels right."

Reward desired learning with praise

Praising desired learning outcomes or behavior improves the chances that the students will retain the material or repeat the behavior. Praising your students' successes associates the desired learning goal with a sense of growing and accepted competence. Reassuring them that they have learned the desired material or technique can help them retain and refine it.

“Kenapa tho kamu nggak mau dengerin omongan bapak?”

“Bukannya Lia nggak mau dengerin bapak, tapi ini memang sudah jadi keputusan Lia, Pak.”

“Keputusan apa? Mbok ya dipikir dulu dengan matang.”

“Sudah Lia pertimbangkan, Pak. Berkali-kali malah.

“Suka aja nggak cukup jadi modal, Nduk.”

“Iya, Lia tahu Pak. Lia juga tidak asal pilih. Lia udah gede Pak.

Belum banyak makan asam garam kehidupan ya Nduk.”

“Udah, bapak tenang aja. Lia cinta sama pilihan Lia.

“Lia pikir … iya bapak.”

“Ya sudah kalo itu sudah jadi keputusanmu.”

Acknowledgements of My Thesis

Alhamdulillahirabbil ‘alamin. I would like to start off my words here by thanking Allah SWT, The Cherisher, The Merciful and The Sustainer, for His mercy, love, and strength granted for me so that I have been able to finish this thesis.

Besides, I fell so indebted to many people who played a part in my thesis accomplishment. Without them, this ‘little masterpiece’ would have never been done as better as I just did. Thus, let me appreciate them all to express my gratitude to them.

First, I would like to express my gratitude to both my consultants, Dr. Gunawan, my first consultant, and Drs. Suharso, my second consultant, for their time, and knowledge. Patiently, they had guided me in developing ideas, correcting misplaced words, improper dictions and structures, as well as shared their knowledge. But, the most important thing for me is they showed me how to research myself, both inside and outside.

Second, my gratitude is also addressed to my family. To my loving Mom and Dad, I want to say “I know, it was too late for me to present you this. But thank you for trusting me on it. This is the way I learn. Finally, I did it. This is for you”. To my lovely sister ‘Niek’ and brother ‘Ayik I also want to say “Thanks for trusting me. Your great supports gave me strength. Actually, the hardest failure comes from oneself. Ganbatte kudasai ne”.

Third, many respects are also devoted to all lecturers at the English Language Education Department who always guided me during my study here and taught me about many priceless things in this life. You do help me to sign out the blind maps of my life.

Fourth, my massive thanks also go to persons who inspire and comfort me during this thesis-making-process. Thanks: to Charlie’s angels plus (Ifa Carter, Oepyx Archer, and Isti Awien) with the words “Thanks for the belief we share together. You put a smile on my face and a spring in my step.”; to Anis Ich with the words “Thanks. You are like a magic book for me. I never get enough to read every single line in your pages.”; to Sholihin with the words Thanks for a bunch of knowledge about writing. It means a lot to me. ”; to Mbak Zaki with the words “Thank you for bringing me to Maiyah Land and introducing me to the fresh sensation of the Kyai Kanjeng’s Mocopat Syafaat among the exhausting days of my thesis making. This does brighten my days.”; to A-14B sweet gals (especially to Mbak Ambar, Rina, Lina, Inun, Andri, Yukyak, Vetty, Nurul, Yuli, Juleha, Gina, Wantie, Lastri and Windha) with the words“Thanks for giving me a hommy place away from home.”; to Khafidz, with the words “You colored my days. You’re still the best friend that anyone could have. Thanks for all.” ; to the 99ers (especially for Ririn, Naser, Prast, Siti, Nisfi, Suci, Ika, Inoeng) with the words “Thank you for the solid friendship, you bring me back to earth if I get a little too full of myself” ; to Vima, with the words “You give me the inspiration to reach for my dreams. Thanks for being my partner as well as my competitor.”; to Ms. Pupud, with the words “Thank you for teaching me. You make each day a new beginning, filled with wonder and joy.”

Fifth, I also would like to thanks to EDSA, Shield Magazine, Relung Theatre, Seven Theatre, UKM Penelitian, PSJ UGM, Aliyya, Syafaat Centre, Hafara Sunday School, Pesantren Raudhatul Muttaqien, my fellows and students in SD Muhammadiah Sapen, SDN Mejing II, Puri Bahasa as well, and also special for Anjar Ndut, Noey, Iwied, Isti Egi, Zartini, Younee, Marcee, Ms.Eko, Budi and Andi, with the words “Thanks for helping me making a better portrait of Eli. You all are my puzzles of love. Each part of you complete my life journey.”. To Gunawan Fans Club’s members I want to say“I expect you all a sweet reunion someday“, to my informants “You enlighten my load. Thank you for being so cooperative with me.; to everybody who had ever helped me but I could not mention your name one by one, I want to say“Thank you. It is hardly possible for me to mention you all by name. Once again, thank you. May Allah bless you.

Finally, it is needless to say that my thesis is still far from being perfect eventhough I have made my best. Though it is so, I expect that this thesis contributes benefits to all readers and those who are involved in this

AN ABSTRACT OF MY THESIS

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF STUDENTS’ LANGUAGE AWARENESS

IN ENGLISH WRITING

AT THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT, FBS, UNY

SEMESTER III, ACADEMIC YEAR 2003/2004

Written by:

Eliana Candrawati

ABSTRACT

This research study is aimed at finding and describing the characteristics of students’ language awareness in English writing at the English Language Education Department, FBS, UNY, semester III, academic year 2003/2004.

This research study is a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this research were the students of Writing III, and their final assignment as the writing product. The data of the research were language awareness elements. The data are drawn from the students’ writing product as documents, and in-depth interview transcripts. The key instrument of the research was the researcher herself. The length of time in collecting the data depended on the redundancy of the data. The constant comparative method was used to analyze the data. To get trustworthiness, the researcher used the triangulation techniques.

The results of the research show that the students’ language awareness was categorized into three major categories: the low level, the medium level and the high level of students’ language awareness. The low level was classified into caused-by-low-motivation and effect. Further, the caused-by-low-motivation category was divided into limited language mastery, which consisted of four foci: grammar, punctuation, diction and spelling, and negative attitude, which was classified into five foci, namely, being careless, being dishonest, being lazy to check works, delaying habit, and limited preparation. Meanwhile, the effect category was divided into causing ineffectiveness, which was classified into four, namely, incorrect structure, incorrect spelling, misfragmented words/sentences and misplaced punctuations, causing inefficiency, which consisted of vague expressions, mistyped words, and looser cohesion, and ignoring originality. The medium level was divided into caused-by medium-motivation and effect. The caused-by-medium-motivation category was divided into average language mastery, which was classified into two, namely, just to follow rules, and just to translate words by words, average motivation, and self-orientation attitude. The effect category consisted of: in gaining effectiveness, which was classified into trapped in commonly-used words and applying simple clauses, and in relation with attitude, which consisted of applying common expression and self-improvement orientation. The high level was divided into caused-by high-motivation and effect. The caused-by-high-motivation category was divided into high consideration, which consisted of three foci: for grammar choices, for punctuation choices, and for diction choices, better preparation, and positive attitude. The effect category was divided into four: producing effectiveness, which was divided into three: accurate sentence structure, accurate diction, and correct punctuation, producing efficiency, which consisted of more message clarity, more various expression, more specific expression, and tighter cohesion, and considering audience. The conclusions show that the students tend to have low language awareness. Based on the implications, the suggestions are the lecturer should recognize the students’ needs and characteristics. A pre-test or questionnaire will be an effective way to measure them. Then, a written reflection submitted after the class is over can be used as one of the means to monitor the students’ progress. Meanwhile, the students should try to motivate themselves to find the most interesting thing to do to increase their writing ability.

A POEM FOR AN ANGEL

Last Sunday, I just cleaned up my old files from my miscellany box when I found my old flowerish small brown box which contained some pieces of important paper from my friends. One of them is a piece of paper from ‘eeva carter’. Well, actually her real name is Arifah Mardiningrum. She’s one of my best friends (when I was a university student, and now, she’s still the best friend I could have :D) and one of the Charlie’s Angels Plus personnels as well:D . Then we crowned her a name of ‘eeva carter’ because she’s crazy about ‘Nick Carter’. (Well, it’s just the same when she calls me using this name: ‘Eliana F_ r _ _r’ …uhmm..It’s better for me not to write my ‘boo’ since it had something to do with my old story).

Anyway, on my 25th birthday, she gave me a poem, a special poem for me. Here it is the poem.

ANGEL

I’m the angel for me

I’m the angel for my family

And they’re angels for me

I’m the angel for my friends

And they’re angels for me

I’m the angel for this life

‘Coz this life is an angel for me

Angel is a help to learn

Angel is a help to live

Angel is a help to love

And we’re all the angels of our heart

-Eeva -

It’s one of the best poems I’ve ever had. It’s a proof as well that I have an angel…and I’m an angel for her…and she’s an angel for me. And…what do you think? Nice, isn’t it? Then would you be my angel too?

LISTEN! SHELTER SURROUNDS YOU

You'll find me in the wind, the seed,
in the elephant's triumphant roar.

I am in the pearls of your elders,
the dirt on the far side of the moon,
the ice under the coats of Jupiter.

Naked person, listen to the hawk's cry.

Didn't you once see five hawks
careening againts the dawn.

I have been humming and hammering
through the years you took to bed, in the moments

you let life fly from your hands

to live your life again, simple days

of cooking and dancing to the radio

What else is there really?
This is you. You can ride the pony

to enter your own life,

be buried in your own clothes.

Your flaws can be touched and loved.

WHEN EVERYTHING IS IN A MESS...

I usually take a deep breath, sit for a while, take a note, make some to-do-lists, then decide the priority. Well, it sounds easy but somehow a little bit hard to do. A part of it can be my mistake. It's because of me who is unable to deal with the problem. It should be a challenge to make a kinda
Right now, the mess is in front of me. It seems that it waits for me to come into. Will I come in? Perhaps...if I don't get prepare for that... progresiveness on how to deal with a hurry sickness. It's about the management of life.

A New Day Has Come

Finally, after the 'pathetic days' , my parents allowed my sister to leave Jogja for Jakarta.
I know it's her dream to work there and she sees it as a chance and as a stepping stone for her carrier in the future time. it's just a matter of responsibility.

THOSE WHO ARE MAKING MERRY TODAY

"Those who do not increase dedication to worship of God as they grow older are unfortunate, for they are making a loss at time when they could be making profit. If they understood this, they would weep for what they finds amusing today."

Following the Path to My Faith

Here i am today, sitting on my cozy hard pink chair in my bedroom, facing to my computer screen, reading on a text, and translating the content of it. There are 15 pages more which should i finish today. Yeah, little bit tiring actually, but i love it so much, coz its content is absolutely amazing. When i read its every single line, i feel as if i reread HAMKA's Tasauf Modern but it is in a more up-to-date setting.
Yeah, I enjoy reading books related to sufism. and the text i'm translating now is about sufism and Fetullah Gullen's thinking about it. You know then why i like doing it. It's about true love (something which is impossible to express with words, for love is an emotional state that can be understood only by the lover) and the balance between the physical and the spiritual. yeah, it's like a sound momentum when i got this text from my friend. i felt it's a sign from Him to show me how to get closer to Him, 'coz these days i was busy with my own carnal business.

Here is one of the best parts of his words that i like.
"Love makes us forget our existence, and annihilates our existence in the existence of our beloved. It therefore requires the lover always to want the beloved, and thus to dedicate himself or herself, without expecting any retur, completely to the desire of the beloved."

In short, i looooooove it sooooooo much. actually, i still want to write more about it and my feeling on it. unfortunately, i must stop and continue my work. let's see then.

PS: tonight i wanna attend Cak Nun's maiyahan in Bantul. i long for it, and i have missed it for some times. but i'm not sure whether i can come or not. i have a pile of work which hasn't finished yet. oh no.

When You Divorce Me, Carry Me Out in Your Arms

Mobil pengantin berhenti didepan flat kami yg cuma berkamar satu. Sahabat2ku menyuruhku untuk membopongnya begitu keluar dari mobil. Jadi kubopong ia memasuki rumah kami. Ia kelihatan malu2. Aku adalah seorang pengantin pria yg sangat bahagia.

Ini adalah keja dian 10 tahun yg lalu. Hari2 selanjutnya berlalu demikian simpel seperti secangkir air bening: Kami mempunyai seorang anak, saya terjun ke dunia usaha dan berusaha untuk menghasilkan banyak uang. Begitu kemakmuran meningkat, jalinan kasih diantara kami pun semakin surut.

Perkawinan kami kelihatan bahagia.

Ia menatap padaku selama beberapa detik tanpa bersuara.

Ia kelihatan sedikit kecurigaan. Ia berusaha tersenyum pada bawahan2ku. Tapi aku membaca ada

kelukaan di matanya.

Sekali lagi, Dew berkata padaku, "Dave, ceraikan ia, O.K.? Lalu kita akan hidup bersama."

Aku mengangguk. Aku tahu aku tidak boleh ragu2 lagi.

Ketika malam itu istriku menyiapkan makan malam, kupegang tangannya, " Ada sesuatu yg harus kukatakan"

Ia duduk diam dan makan tanpa bersuara. Sekali lagi aku melihat ada luka dimatanya. Tiba2 aku tidak tahu harus berkata apa. Tapi ia tahu kalo aku terus

berpikir.

Aku melihat ia sedang menulis sesuatu. Karena capek aku segera ketiduran. Ketika aku terbangun

tengah malam, aku melihat ia masih menulis. Aku tertidur kembali.

Hari keempat, ketika aku membangunkannya, aku merasa kalau kami masih mesra seperti sepasang suami istri dan aku masih membopong kekasihku dilenganku. Bayangan Dew menjadi samar.

Aku berkata padanya, "Kelihatannya tidaklah sulit membopongmu sekarang".

Sekali lagi, aku merasakan perasaan sakit. Tanpa sadar ku sentuh kepalanya.

Jadi aku minta maaf padamu"

Dew tiba2 seperti tersadar.

SING YOUR WAY HOME

That’s the title of my favorite children song. Well, singing the song just reminds me to the old days of mine, when I did enjoyed much being a university student in the State University of Yogyakarta. This song was taught by Mr. and Mrs. C (well, that’s the way we called Mr. and Mrs. Harold Christensen, our lecturer.) when I was taking my special subject for teaching young learner during my English teaching class. Here is the song.

Sing your way home at the end of the day
Sing your way home cease the shadow away
Smile every mile for air you may roam
It would lighten your load
It would brighten your road if you sing your way home.

See, it’s so simple that perhaps you can just remember it for a second. When you read the line-by-line words in the song lyric and try to go inside them deeply, you’ll find it as a philosophical song. It’s like powerful words which say that there is no need to worry something since there are many things which are left to thanks for.

MS. RISK

Dreams are ….illustration from the book your soul is writing about you.
(Marsha Norman)

Will you take the risk for them?
Sure. Why not?

A VALEDICTION: FORBIDDING MOURNING

As virtuous men pass mildly away,
and whisper to their souls to go,
while some of their sad friends do say,
the breath goes now, and some say, no:

So let us melt, and make no noise,
No tear-floods, nor sigh-tempests move,
'Twere profanation of our joys
To tell the laity our love.

Moving of th' earth brings harms and fears,
Men reckon what it did and meant,
But trepidation of the spheres,
Though greater far, is innocent.

Dull sublunary lovers' love
(Whose soul is sense) cannot admit
Absence, because it doth remove
Those things which elemented it.

But we by a love so much refined,
That ourselves know not what it is,
Inter-assured of the mind,
Care less, eyes, lips, and hands to miss.

Our two souls therefore, which are one,
Though I must go, endure not yet
A breach, but an expansion,
Like gold to airy thinness beat.

If they be two, they are two so
As stiff twin compasses are two,
Thy soul the fixed foot, makes no show
to move, but doth, if th' other do.

And though it in the center sit,
Yet when the other far doth roam,
It leans and hearkens afetr it,
And grows erect, as that comes home.

Such wilt thou be to me, who must
Like th' other foot, obliquely run;
Thy firmness makes my circle just,
And makes me end, where I begun.

-John Donne (1572-1631)-

Why?

Gimme a Break

Wow..wow...it's like a hell day in the serial of blala..blaa..(I didn't remember what was it.)
it's like a satire joke for my life...
I just remembered these days I felt too scattered to do something. No garden. No cooking. No singing. No mailing. No chatting. No writing. Just the mundane of life happening over and over. I felt crippled. There must be something wrong with my life these day. I couldn’t help it. Then I decided to go somewhere, a place where I could find the joy of my life.

I do remember hate that came after .. a broken heart ..
Sadness that make me so helpless .. I cant fight ..
I can remember how long it last ..
I'm sure it went away so freakin’ fast ..

Far too many emotions
that taint my soul
before my faith
and often I drown in the moment
when in the end they all ..

I do remember laughter that can make .. my stomach hard
With happiness that make it all pretty .. even a dirt ..
I can remember how long it last ..
I'm pretty sure it went away so fast ..

when in the end they are

a perfect dream of a vivid fantasy
imagination that could comeback to me

where every path I take feels seem the only on the right direction ..

so I’m growing old but life doesn't seem as pretty ..
with sometimes life as not blue as an endless sea ..

I should not mind to morn ..

April 1st 2008

I wrote this on the 1st April '08:

"The day's changing.
The time's running.
Then I'm flying.
Trying to pursue
My dreams...my happiness...
They run fast...
But I run faster
Then we'll meet
through the momentum of love."

A WHITE ROSE

The red rose whispers of passion,
And the white rose breathes of love;
Oh, the red rose is a falcon,
And the white rose is a dove.

But I send you a cream-white rosebud,
With a flush on its petal tips;
For the love that is purest and sweetest
Has a kiss of desire on the lips.
